When I began our poetry workshop, I planned for it to last about six weeks; this stretched into two months, and even then some children didn't want to stop. But it's possible that other groups might not find the same gratification that this one did, and quitting time might have to be moved up. In any case, the activity of publishing a book creates enthusiasm as it brings the workshop to a close. Final Editing The last step in getting ready to publish our book of poems was the final editing conference.

Now, as we looked back on nearly two months of work, we knew we truly deserved a party. Planning the Event After we agreed that food was the primary consideration, we talked about whom to invite and what else we could do to celebrate our work. I told about a poetry reading I had gone to where poets stood up before the audience and read their poems, and everyone applauded them. Afterward they signed their books of poems for people who had bought copies. This sounded appealing to most of the children, and we began to consider having our own poetry reading.

Look, it's all one piece of wire. " Kristen had tested her pin's sharpness on her neighbor. While they thought this over, looking again at their safety pins and commenting to their neighbors, I wrote the poem on the chalkboard.
