The other three are good character first impressions. None of them gives readers all of the possible bits of information that could be used in a first impression. But each includes enough to make readers remember and care about the character. With your class, compare the information included in each of the three effective first impressions with the complete list presented in Activity 9. Which first impression did your students like best? Why? 40 GET IT WRITE! Review the information students wanted to add to impressions they thought were inadequate.

A good motive makes that goal very important to the character. B, C, D, and F are all possible reasons why she wants to find her parents. We could even use all four. However, C, D, and F don't make her goal seem very important, do they? They are all selfish motives. Saving her parents might make her famous, but it won't make readers enthusiastically support Cecelia Sue and want to read her story. B is the best answer. The lizard will be useful later in making the story exciting, and saving her parents from being killed makes her goal seem much more important.

Eight Essential Elements. Some of the elements were not overtly stated in this story segment but were, instead, strongly implied by what the characters said and did. The conflict between Itsy and her mother is not overtly stated; it is implied by what they say. Readers assume that there must be some tension and conflict between them because they did not agree in their one line of dialogue. Writers often imply, rather than state, important information through characters' words and actions. This is particularly true for goals and motives (Elements #2 and 3).
