What determines profitable careers within the box of technology? What are the early symptoms of later mess ups. And particularly, how do girls scientists' occupation paths fluctuate from men's? whereas you may theorize approximately those questions, those that visit the difficulty of an intensive empirical research locate an more and more complicated photo.
Using the biggest database of its style (699 questionnaires and two hundred face-to-face conversations), the authors examine the profession paths of recipients of prestigious postdoctoral fellowships--scientists, engineers, and mathematicians. They define a theoretical framework for realizing the explanations of gender disparities between scientists, attempt the speculation of a gender- particular "glass ceiling," and supply a wealth of pertinent statistical information.
Gender variations in technological know-how Careers unearths that, as institutional legislation replaced, styles of discrimination and exclusion turn into extra sophisticated. regardless of the decline of inflexible gender-role socialization, many social practices persist that lead, on usual and sometimes in counterintuitive methods, to the buildup of dangers for girls scientists. This publication is directed to students within the social sciences, aspiring and practising scientists, and directors drawn to fairness matters.

For as I have argued over the decades, the cognitive work of science takes place within a slowly changing institutional and structural framework. We must therefore understand such societal aspects of science as its evolving norms, sanctions, stratification, processes of competition, and reward-system if we are to acquire a Page x fuller understanding of such cognitive aspects of science as choices of problems and concepts. Happily, Holton's own method of ''thematic analysis" can serve me well for identifying some sociological themes in this work that are not instantly evident.

Somewhat ironically, research into the stratifying mechanisms among scientists has complicated the goal of this line of researchdetermining the extent of universalism in science. The Mertonian research program has established the important role of past performance (track record and reputation) and of expected future performance (prophecy of scientific potential).
