Bion reflected yet another psychoanalytic orientation, however, which would have gladdened the hearts of followers of Fairbairn, Winnicott, Balint, and Kohut. Unlike most other so-called Kleinians and Freudians, Bion emphasized the importance of the self, of the need for the self to have an empathic relationship by the self for itself, and believed that there must also be an object whose empathic containment of the self is of vital importance for the infant's welfare. Bion was therefore the first Kleinian to give metapsychological enfranchisement to the independent importance of an unempathic (non-containing) external reality.

One can picture these transformations on Bion's grid as the relationship between definitory hypothesis as the emergence of the "messiah preconception" and its challenge by Column Two (psi). Thus, "points of view" conveys a sensory prejudice of the eyes and is not exact enough intuitively. The term vertex (and vertices) more ably conveys the mathematical rigor Bion had for so long a time tried to instill into psychoanalytic thinking.
