A scanner is a valuable tool for grabbing the digital images that you'll be retouching or combining. Many models are available for less than $100, but if you're serious about photo manipulation, I recommend tripling your expenditure and getting a decent scanner. The Epson scanner I am currently in love with has true 2400 x 2400 optical resolution (not particularly useful for scanning photos, but a godsend when grabbing images of slides) and includes the best and most convenient system for slide scanning that I've seen in a flatbed.

Retouching and compositing are a pair of related tools that have been available for most of the history of photography, but only were wielded by those who could become adept in the intricate skills needed to apply them. Retouching is generally thought of as the process of making modifications to an image by applying dyes or pigments to original negatives and transparencies (or copies of them) or photographic prints to disguise certain features or create new ones. Covering up blemishes, removing dust spots, filling in a bald spot in a portrait, or reconstructing part of an image that has been damaged all fall under the purview of retouching.

It's hard to go wrong with one of today's slick ink-jet printers. I make lots and lots of prints and prefer printers like my Canon model that uses separate ink tanks for each color. Nothing is more annoying than paying $32 for a combined color ink cartridge, and then having it run out of, for example, yellow ink while the cyan and magenta tanks are still half full. Your Environment You'll want a comfortable desk and chair with enough space for your keyboard, mouse and/or digitizing tablet, both monitors, and your scanner.
