In 1965, after completing his freshman year, Lynch and Jack Fisk set off for Europe to be schooled by Viennese Expressionist master Oskar Kokoschka (1869–1980). ”112 Ironically, today Kokoschka is one of the painters Lynch is “wild about”113 and it’s easy to see why: As a mature artist, he would view the Viennese creator of expressionistic portraits, figure studies, and cityscapes as a kindred spirit. ”115 Kokoschka, who was called “the slicer-open of souls,”116 infuses the personal space of his subjects with tension, and felt that the artist should “build houses outward from within,”117 evoking Lynch’s gift for portraying houses as psychic, emotion-manifesting spaces.
