The first twenty-five years of the microbrewing movement saw relatively steady growth. After Horseshoe Bay Brewing broke the ice in 1982, there was an initial burst in 1984 with the arrival of three more breweries that are still flourishing today: Spinnakers, Granville Island Brewing and Vancouver Island Brewery (originally named Island Pacific Brewing). New breweries arrived in waves over the next two decades—and there were many closures, too, as prospective brewers learned of the challenges associated with this brand-new industry.

Spinnakers uses hops grown on its own farm in Sooke in a variety of fresh-hopped beers each fall.
