Subjectivity theories of subjectivity stand at the intersection of ontology and epistemology (hall, 2004, p. 4). an ontological investment inheres in every conception of subjectivity—and every qualitative framework articulates this investment in different ways.

This subject/object dichotomy, known as Cartesian dualism, became the foundation of scientific research in which researchers (subjects) study and measure objects. Within the social sciences, this has particular consequences since the “objects” of social research are generally other people. despite the logical problems created by subject/object distinctions, descartes’ radically isolated individual became the ideal knower. Cartesian presuppositions enable us to experience objects and facts as being in the world.

In dominant research practices, the underlying philosophy of science operates implicitly and unaccountably. This has profound consequences that will be explored throughout the book.
