Stanley is presented as brutish and crass, but the play also raises questions about whether the ways of the genteel South ever really existed and, if so, what truly caused their demise. Careful readers and viewers will make note of Blanche’s suggestion that the Belle Reve estate was not lost by accident or by force but over time due to a long pattern of moral decay and death. Through this suggestion and through the revelation of Blanche’s own defects, Williams gives us room to propose that Stanley is not solely responsible for Blanche’s demise, just as industrialism is not solely responsible for the loss of gentility and tradition in American culture.
